Lots of work this past couple of weeks, which ended with the Golden Gate Guards party last night at the Eagle. Jack had called me earlier, asking me to increase the count from 100 to 150 people, because Marcus' memorial was supposedly going to have everyone out and about that night. In practice, it was pretty quiet, and only about half the food got eaten. I'm hoping that the leftovers get suitably distributed. If you go to the Eagle this afternoon you might want to raid the walk-in for some pretty decent salads: prawn, mango, jicama and roasted pasilla pepper with curry yoghurt dressing, and orzo pasta with pine nuts, raisins, red onions, and marjoram. As well as sushi and ham flatbread rollup things. No guarantee they'll still be there though. ;-)

The work-malaise thing has suffered from a dozen likely causes, none of them seeming much more likely than any other. But I had an assistant in yesterday, the first time I've had an outsider in the kitchen working on an actual event. The interaction lifted my spirits and made me think that maybe the real problem is simple loneliness. I constantly have to fight the feeling that the world outside the kitchen is passing me by; having a bit of the outside world come in makes it seem more real, more relevant. Actually saying out loud what the operating principles of the kitchen are leads me to feel like I've got an actual cuisine happening, in every sense of the word.

Got a friend up for a few days and we're luxuriating in the bliss of doing nothing. The weather is improving and looking to be quite nice for a few days. Tomorrow we are going to go to the coast and collect some chanterelles, have lunch with a hippie, that sort of thing.

Oh, I hate feeling alone in the kitchen. Especially if my timeline is slipping.

Having lunch with a Hippie is a good thing.

Aahh..except for the veggies.

Gotta agree with you about having a companion while you work. My most productive, enjoyable days were when I could interact with my fellow artists in our studio.
