Gotta get to work soon. But a few random updates.

Odds and ends from the trip - I feel compelled to complete the list of LJ handle-dropping lest anyone feels left out. ;-) Ted and I were surprised when, while stopped for construction near Tillamook, [livejournal.com profile] bentwright rolled up and said hi. "The Road" is a very big place, but in some ways very small! Obviously he was headed to the run as well, but it always makes me feel good to run into people unexpectedly. Makes the world seem more friendly.

Also in attendance were [livejournal.com profile] sinnabor and [livejournal.com profile] gerardwing. I think there were something like eight of us California guys there, which pleased our hosts to no end. And, by coincidence, I was able to make lunch with [livejournal.com profile] jstreygr in Portland - meeting locals in faraway places never fails to be interesting.

Doing a 500 mile day - and not regretting it - meant everything to me. I thought I was never again going to be able to ride more than 200 miles a day without pain. But I have, after three years, broken back into that realm where being in the saddle is indefinitely sustainable. It's a feeling of great power - as if the whole country is in the palm of my hand. Hard to describe, but wonderful. If only it didn't use so much gasoline - I can afford it, but my native frugality and eco-consciousness makes burning oil for recreational purposes seem kind of decadent nowadays.

Back home the situation is a little worrisome. As you have probably heard in the news, there are about 800 fires burning out of control in the state, and about 130 here in Mendocino County alone. The air is thick with smoke, so much we can't even see a quarter mile, and the sun is faint and red. It's ominous and scary, but I can't help but be moved by how beautiful it is to look at. No fires near us, fortunately, and so far it hasn't damaged any structures. The fire season is early so they aren't particularly violent ones. But with almost no containment, how is this going to end? It is an unprecedented situation.

I have been considering the possibility of going down to the fairgrounds and setting up catering for the firefighters. But I don't have the equipment to handle something at that scale yet, so I think I would just be getting in the way. I'll keep an eye on things and maybe make a few calls to see if there is a way I could fit in. Citizenship, marketing opportunities, AND unlimited eye candy? Things like that don't come by very often, so it seems terrible to not get involved. But I have so much on my plate already.

I'm having to start some stricter time-blocking if I'm to get anything done. My LJ and internet block is over in ten minutes. Please pardon my lack of interaction in the meanwhile. Catch ya later!
