Glad that's over.

What is really important about this election, for me, is not that Obama won. It's that Romney lost. The Republicans had only one goal for the past four years, and it has failed. Badly. Hopefully, they will find some more constructive goals for the next four. Because, truth be known, while I am at heart a liberal, I am also sympathetic to conservative values, and appreciate the need for a viable opposition party to keep liberalism in line. Republicans have done a truly shitty job at this task, and with any luck they will learn from their failure, step up to the plate, and do it better next time around. A combination of modesty and seriousness would serve them well at this point.

This election, hopefully, is the last gasp for the losing strategy of naked populism, cynicism, and lies. Nothing expresses this toxic combination better than the "unskewed polls" that have gone WAY out on a limb over these past few weeks to accuse the "liberal media" of systematic bias and deceit. It was clearly a desperate strategy, given that they must have known they would have egg on their face only a few weeks down the road. It was an all or nothing thing for them, and they got nothing. Hopefully the very word "unskewed" will carry with it the taint of failure for a long, long time. I plan to use it a lot for the next few years.
