Back in the '60s, when "under God" was added to the pledge of allegiance, _The Realist_ published a cartoon with the legend "One nation under God". It showed -- well, not precisely that. Uncle Sam was on his belly.

I remember that change. To this day I don't say the "under god" because that's not the way I learned it.

Being born in 1965, I was taught it with the "under god" phrase - but I'd never SAY it once I reached what George Carlin called "the age of reason." :)

Actually, the fundys looked at a bible passage, and see the Tea Party as a way to bankrupt the US, and take it over, making it into an all Christian nation. People in the south are positively ecstatic over this, and yours truly may become homeless ... along with millions of others.
