On the road again, taking Ted up to my dad's place in BC. In short:

Spent last night in Winnemucca, which is notable for allegedly having the worst dining of any city in the 48 states. I could well believe it. There are several Basque restaurants which teh internets says are very good. Unfortunately they're all closed on Mondays.

Lots and lots of real good looking guys there. Very high crusty factor in that town. Desert rats and cowboys, yum. There was a guy driving a small drilling truck (cue porn music here) that was just down at the other end of the motel that really tempted me, I kinda got the sense he could be persuaded. Quite friendly, but of course I was completely tongue-tied. He was up and gone before we were up, and that was at 5 AM.

Had a very long drive to [livejournal.com profile] chefxh's place today. The desert was unusually moist and green, downright lush in places. Drove more than 200 miles through Nevada on a two lane road with excellent pavement, not a soul to be seen.

Lunch in Pendleton at the Rainbow Cafe, an ambiguously queer irish cowboy bar. Last time I was there it looked like every roughneck in town had just been paid and was determined to spend it all on beer. Lunch today was a little more subdued.

Tonight, Frank suggested a western-operated sichuan cafe in south Spokane, and we had a great dinner. Ma po tofu, dan dan noodles, chicken with sweet potatoes and dates, and mongolian beef. Chinese food is pretty spotty east of the Cascades so this is a good spot to know about.

Many Yelp reviews of this place criticize the fact that it is staffed and patronized almost exclusively by Euro-Americans. Who cares when it's this good. I have to think, though, that it's possible to make consistently excellent food in another culinary tradition but still be guilty of "crucifying Santa". This is in reference to the possibly apocryphal tale of Santa Claus hanging on the cross in a Tokyo department store window. It's a term I like to use to describe the act of making a terrible mistake when reproducing the traditions of another culture, however sincerely one might try.

Going to spend a few days at the lake. On Sunday, a bunch of Border Riders members are coming through on their five-day tour and I'm going to host them for swimming and lunch. How often do you get mostly-naked bikers frolicking on your dad's dock? Should be interesting.
