One more bit of excitement from the weekend. We went to lounge in the river at a nearby state park, where it would be quiet and cool. We had just parked our bikes when we heard a great crash, and saw a big cloud of dust appear about 200 feet distant. A large tree had fallen:

A few hours earlier and a little to the right, and the campers would have been flattened. The trunk curves and clips the corner of another tent about ten feet behind. Once fallen, it was completely immobile - you couldn't even budge it.

I'm glad it didn't end on a grisly note. It sort of set the tone for the weekend: Life is short. Party hard!!!

Some twenty years ago, I was hiking around Weyr Creek Hot Springs in Northern Idaho. On leaving the hot water and heading down the trail, some movement in the canopy caught my eye just ahead and across the creek. Suddenly, a tree of similar diameter to your photo crashes down across my path not twenty feet in front of me. The canyon was quite narrow at that point and the tree was not able to lay flat on the ground. Wedged between the canyon walls, the tree was about four feet off the ground where it crossed the trail ahead of me. Several of the now downward pointing branches were driven into the ground like fence posts.

I walk warily in the woods now and always look to the trees. You'll recall that I commented on the some of the wacky off balance trees that crowd the forest on your property...
