I'm about to make my very first trip to New York since I was a child. If any of you out there have any Fabulous Ideas that include an offer of overnight accommodation, I could arrange to be at loose ends the afternoon and evening of Tuesday the 23rd and maybe also the 24th. It needs to be all set up by Monday morning.

I'll be staying the nights of the 21st and the 22nd at an unspecified hotel near Rockerfeller University, where I will be consulting. Also, I'm looking for suggestions for a good place near there to have dinner with colleagues Monday night.

Manhattan terrifies me and I have no idea of what to expect. Fortunately, transportation is being arranged on my behalf, so at least I won't have to worry about driving.

Driving? Not in NYC!

Suggestions for your free time? Yes. Go to Zabar's (right-click and save-as the movie link, then you'll be able to see it at bigger-than-matchbook size) and nearby Citarella's and H&H Bagel. If you're looking for a place full of bearded men, go to B+H Photo-Video (Sounds unlikely? Of course it does. Just trust me.) Cheap good eats in midtown Manhattan while you're strolling round? Yeah, that'll be Big Nick's.

Look - I found myself in NYC for part of spring break one year in college; staying with acquaintances in Queens and getting around by subway. I survived. ;)

If you have the time, you might want to see a bit of biker history that's been there since the '60s and walk by the Hell's Angels clubhouse in the East Village at 77 East Third Street.

I agree about the good beard viewing at B&H Photo. Also they're a good place to buy anything photographic.
I figured that I'd be totally overwhelmed by New York but I found it pretty slow paced and spaceous. Maybe it was just the time of year I was there or the times of day that I was out but it wasn't too crazy. The subway system is a bit complex but you just get a good map and away ya go.
I wish that I had gone farther away than I did. Like to the Bronx or New Jersey. Places I'd heard of all my life from movies and TV and seemed almost mythical but are real places apparently.

"Clubhouse" does imply "members only." ;)

Unless of course, you were invited in; I have no idea how one would manage that.
