Coincident with turning 40: upgrading to Office 2007. I guess now that I'm an old man, I can rage incoherently at the seemingly arbitrary rearrangement of a menu layout that has been more or less constant for twenty years. Cognitively speaking, installing this upgrade is like having a minor stroke. This is way more irritating than I had ever imagined it would be.

I use http://openoffice.org/ for my office application needs - does everything MS Office does, and is free!

Ditto - free was more important to me, but it does use a more traditional menu system as opposed to the Office '07 "ribbon". As I have no esoteric demands, it works fine for me. Someone who depends on some of Office's more outre features might not be able to switch.

I've heard that about 2007. I hear that once you get used to it, it isn't too bad at all. However, for our folks at work, I've kept us on 2003. In the future though, I can foresee us going to 2010.

After a very brief adjustment period, I find the ribbon to be a much more useful model than menus.

I'm still teaching Office 2003 to my students. The State of Washington owns all of our computers, and has refused to upgrade any of the state systems.

I had the same experience when "upgrading" from XP to Win7 - many just plain ANNOYING changes. It lasted for all of two days before I wiped the disk and reinstalled XP (which I had to do anyway :) )

Happy Birthday, my friend!

"installing this upgrade is like having a minor stroke"

Have you considered going into marketing for Microsoft?

Congrats. I remember being 40. It was 1992. I more enjoyed 1994 and later. You will too.

There's a menu layout in Office?
I always thought they just kept slapping obtuse icons on the toolbar at each iteration.
