Sturgis bound
Jul. 29th, 2010 01:50 pmBeen busy last night and this morning, packing up for French Meadows and Sturgis. The plan is a little complicated - I take John to French Meadows, then he takes Ted's car home while I take Ted to Sturgis.
Not riding the bike this year, as I'm taking the camp kitchen to cook for the guys, and it's all packed in the Element. I think all the gear exceeds the recommended weight limit, but it seems to drive just fine. I had a huge amount of anxiety over this - I planned it carefully but I still wasn't sure it was going to fit. I had hoped it would pack up more gracefully, and not be crammed to the ceiling, but unfortunately it (almost) is. Hopefully once we leave French Meadows I will be able to send some stuff home with John and once again be able to see out the back window - I'm sharing a cabin at the campground, so there's a bunch of things I won't be needing.
At least there is nothing on the roof. Nothing is worse than having to deal with a roof rack. And it's going to be much, much nicer than driving the van, which was the Plan B in case my estimates were seriously unrealistic.
I'm plagued by the sense that while traveling, I'm abandoning some terribly important responsibility at home, and that I'm a Bad Person for not taking care of it. For some reason I cannot shake this feeling, no matter how thoroughly I prepare for my absence. It kind of puts a damper on the experience.

Date: 2010-07-29 09:26 pm (UTC)I'm pining to go, but I won't pout. Give the guys at FM hugs for me, and make Hawg's Dawgs fat and happy. You'll be in my (dirty) thoughts!
