Acorn Stuffing

It's the woodpeckers. With our wet spring, there was another big acorn crop this year, and they've been going NUTS stuffing them into every available crevice. Every time we open the pumphouse door, we get showered with them. Here is a single day's accumulation under the back hatch of my car:

The amazing thing is that they're all shelled and split in half. If you've ever tried to shell an acorn, you know it's hard to do without crushing the nut inside. These guys are experts.
Seems to me you could feed a whole family by putting up acorn-boxes with little holes in them, and waiting for the woodpeckers to bring them to you. Wonder how long it would take them to learn that the hairless valley apes are tricking them?
I advise anyone visiting the oak forests of California this fall to pull up their pants. Any exposed cracks are likely to get stuffed!
