Creepy TV lamp

John tells me that the purpose of TV lamps was to help protect your eyes from the UV radiation emitted by early televisions. Extra light prevented your pupils from dilating, or something like that.
Given a choice between looking at that, or risking blindness? I'll take my chances, thanks!
