Spectacular hideousness, spotted in the window of an antique shop in Ft. Bragg:

John tells me that the purpose of TV lamps was to help protect your eyes from the UV radiation emitted by early televisions. Extra light prevented your pupils from dilating, or something like that.

Given a choice between looking at that, or risking blindness? I'll take my chances, thanks!

Oh my freaking GOD.

Sometimes you see something that's so, well, whatever it is, you have to hit the PAUSE button on the entire world until you can stop laughing so hard milk comes out your nose even if you haven't been drinking milk.

This is one of those times.

I WANT THIS LAMP.

I can go get it for you if you really want it. I believe it's $65, the price tag is obscured in this photo.

65 is a bit much for only that much ugly.

Ya see? I was thinking that said 15.

Now, if it were 5 times uglier than that, I'd say go for it.

Thanks for sharing the wonderful image, though!

I can remember those from the '50s and '60s. That black panther one was very popular. I guess with LCD and plasma TVs, radiation from the CRT and HV transformer is no longer a problem.

I suppose I am some kind of esthetic cripple. I find that lamp rather silly, but less ugly than many very common art objects in the US public environment, such as cosmetics, Garfield, Mylar balloons, small-business storefronts, motel signs, newspaper advertising supplements, rock & roll, and station breaks on vulgar radio stations.

I’ve never heard of this “black panther” lamp that seems so commonplace to some of you.

Did a bit of research and look what I found:

I remember when I was a kid, fixing neighbors TV's from the rear, and having to unplug and/or move the wires going to the black panther, so I could pull off the back.
