The cookbook my sister co-authored has won the Best Cookbook in the World for 2010 at the
Gourmand World Cookbook Awards!!!

Here's a copy of the press release.

Here is the book's Facebook page.

This is a pretty big deal. It's not your usual cookbook - it's also a bit of a manifesto, attempting to bring the cuisine of the South Pacific to foreign visitors. For the most part, Pacific resorts have been feeding tourists crappy frozen and imported things, focusing on the familiar while ignoring the amazing local cuisine. If this can be changed, the islands gain both a new source of tourist revenue and something to make tourism itself more attractive. Everybody wins.

Unfortunately, with Christchurch completely wrecked by the earthquake, my sister was unable to attend the awards gala in Paris this week. :-( What a bummer, not being there for the crowning moment of your whole life's work!

We will be visiting them in Christchurch in a couple of weeks, and bringing my niece back with us, as she has been quite traumatized by the experience. She will continue on to spend some time at my dad's place in BC, as her school in NZ has been destroyed and she doesn't have any place to study until at least the end of the year.

That's awesome! I bet there's some amazing stuff in there.

Shame about all of the craziness down in NZ... it's nice that your niece will be able to get away and try to focus on school for a while.

That's a beautiful honor and a tragic irony. I feel so sorry for your niece, but am sure that some time at her grandpa's wonderful place will help her heal.

Visiting Hawaii necessarily separates me from Mike, so when I visit my relatives there I focus on the food. It is strange how the only cookbooks there are church collections of recipies where half of the ingredients are not available or called by those names in California.
