By some measures it was the most violent earthquake in recorded history. "The acceleration experienced in February 2011 would "totally flatten" most world cities, causing massive loss of life; in Christchurch, New Zealand's stringent building codes limited the disaster."

Was the land beneath Christchurch a swamp before? That would explain the cars sinking photo and the extreme shaking. Liquefaction was also common in the Loma Prieta quake in Watsonville and the Gilroy area. Some of those area experienced extreme shaking also.

It's all a big silty floodplain, the worst kind of soil for a quake!
