On the road
Feb. 16th, 2012 09:35 amLeft home at 5AM yesterday morning for a road trip, and arrived at
twobraids' home in Corvallis in time for dinner. Took the coastal route this time, up 101 and across on 199. The weather was absolutely stunning, one of the most beautiful days I've ever seen. Shame I didn't have more time to kick around en route.
Stone Lagoon, near Eureka, wins the prize for coolest beach on the north coast. Didn't have much time there but liked it a lot.
Leaving home is always a little traumatic since I feel a strong sense of responsibility for the place. I do nearly all the cooking and cleaning, so in my mind, John and Bill must be starving to death in heaps of filth by now.
Heh. No, actually, they are capable of taking care of themselves, but I have such a strong nurturing instinct that it's probably a relief to get rid of me for a while. Since I'm the Italian pasta-and-cheese fanatic, while John is more of a German spuds-and-milk kind of guy, he refers to my time away as the "Mendocino County Potato Festival". I know I like having the house to myself too. What's hard, though, is the visceral feeling that I'm never going to see the place again. I've grown very attached to home, so much so that leaving for even a few days gives me a sense of mourning.
That usually lasts about 24 hours before it's WHOOPIE!!! PARTY TIME!!! I've got my snowboard, a sleeping bag, a bottle of bourbon, a little jar full of reefers, some beef jerky, and a credit card. What more does anyone need? Oh yeah, lots of J-lube.
Today, Lars, Mike Byrne (fellow RMCer) and I are going to Breitenbush Hot Springs for a faerie gathering, where there will be no phone or internet, then on Tuesday I'm off to BC for some snowboarding with my dad. The schedule got shifted a little because he discovered he could sign up for a one-day medical conference at the resort, satisfying part of his annual coursework requirement while making the whole thing tax deductible. Yeah, life is rough. (Did you know that the location of his beautiful lakeshore mansion makes him eligible for "isolation pay"? I LOLed so hard at that. I mean, it's fucking indecent.)
Looking forward to seeing a bunch of old and new friends along the way. Back home probably in the first week of March. Hopefully you'll be hearing lots of juicy stories from the gathering once I'm back on the grid.
