I was ten years old during the total eclipse of 1980, and lived in Portland in the path of totality. Alas, it was cloudy, but still an interesting experience. The news on TV said that the next eclipse of the sun visible from the US mainland wouldn't be until 2017, which seemed impossibly far away at the time. How interesting that when the time comes, the very center of the path of totality will pass through Breitenbush hot springs on the final day of the traditional August faerie gathering. The faeries better #$^@#&$@ not lose their booking for that weekend, because I'm planning to be there!

I remember that eclipse. It was also overcoast where I was too. I felt so ripped off. Then when Halley's Comet was coming we were all looking forward to it. Another rip off. I want my money back for these.

So this one coming up, yay! They'll probably do some performance art/voodoo ceremony which would be neat.

Actually, if you're willing to settle for less than a total eclipse, there should be a very nice annular one near Reno in about six weeks. See: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Solar_eclipse_of_May_20,_2012

It should reach greatest annularity in that locale sometime in the mid to late afternoon. And I expect at that time in the spring cloudiness shouldn't be a big issue.

I am planning to go see it in Eureka. The Molochs motorcycle club is having a run up there and it cannot be a coincidence.
