If this day wasn't crazy enough already, I was laying peacefully in bed trying to sleep when I was attacked by a praying mantis. I don't know if they can harm humans, but it scared the SHIT out of me. Four inches long and really aggressive, too. It kept going after my hand as I tried to hustle it out the door on a piece of clothing.

This was the first time in my life I have ever checked under my bed for monsters. I think it was an entirely justifiable precaution.

I think they just get pinchy with people. Some keep them as pets. They’re good to have around the garden as they eat tons of nasty garden pests, but I wouldn’t want one in bed with me.

They don't use venom of any kind, so at most they can manage to be annoying. (I suppose if it managed to break the skin, that wound could get infected but that's nothing specific to mantises.)

Yeah, but they can take on mice and hummingbirds, and win! Admittedly they would take a very long time to chew me to death but they're super intimidating when they're hungry. There's some astonishing YouTube videos showing their hunting habits. I knew they were predatory, but not THAT predatory.

Just for hits and giggles I did a Google search on what a praying mantis means when they come into our lives, according to spiritual beliefs:

Praying Mantis Meanings in the Realms of Animal Symbolism

The mantis comes to us when we need peace, quiet and calm in our lives. Usually the mantis makes an appearance when we've flooded our lives with so much business, activity, or chaos that we can no longer hear the still small voice within us because of the external din we've created.

After observing this creature for any length of time you can see why the symbolism of the praying mantis deals with stillness and patience. The mantis takes her time, and lives her life at her own silent pace.
