Day ride to Camp Mendocino
Sep. 8th, 2008 01:15 pmSunday, I had to run out to Camp Mendocino, where I'm cooking for the Golden Gate Gards run in the first weekend of October. I do recommend this run - it's very laid back, there's indoor lodging available, and the run show is always over the top funny.

But before that, I stopped by the Roots of Motive Power open house in Willits, where of course I took lots of photos of rusting old hulks and hot crusty engineers...
I've known Jerry for a while... I'd forgotten that he was involved in this organization, but the minute I saw him I recalled him telling me about it. Pictures don't quite convey his raw hugeness.

They ensure the safety of old boilers by measuring the wall thickness with ultrasound.

This fellow is responsible for maintaining this crane. I was tickled to hear him call Jerry "Sir".

Big antique steam shovel...

Crusty!

SUPER EXTRA CRUSTY!!!

Then it was off to Camp Mendocino, which is 8 miles off of highway 20 on a rather slow gravel road. It takes about half an hour on the bike. The place certainly looks nice:

Although I'd been there before, I wanted to do a complete photo-survey and inspection of the kitchen so as to know just what to expect. The kitchen is huge - they served more than 40,000 meals there this summer, mostly for the boys and girls camp. I found these amusing sandwich presses that I might put to good use:

Tsk tsk.

Then it was off for a splash in the Noyo River, which is not a very big river, but it has deep, crystal clear pools that are a pleasure to cool off in. I switched out my leather boots for some wetsuit booties and engaged in my favorite kind of hiking: underwater. Here's one for Duke:

The weather's been so hot, it was just a delight to be somewhere cool and moist for a change. It was one of those perfect, ridiculously tender days, without another soul in sight. I wish I could go somewhere like this every day.

I then continued to Ft. Bragg intending to come back through Boonville, but the fog on the coast was so cold I didn't want to deal with it. Altogether an excellent ride.
