Being up here has given me a bit of "photographer's block". The landscape is full of beautiful things that are hard to capture with the camera. Something in me doesn't want to press the button unless the photo really does the scene justice, and those photos seem hard to come by right now.

Maybe it's because I don't want the photo to destroy some illusion of beauty that isn't really there, or is so idiosyncratic that others wouldn't see it even in person? Or maybe it's because my photographs can never match the reality, and so defile it? I dunno, with such a strong investment in this place, a lot of emotions seem to cloud the purpose of photography.

Also on my mind is that I have to start being professional about my photos - just putting them on a blog is one thing, but when they become the public face of a business, that's a whole new set of considerations. There are very few photos I've taken, food photos in particular, that I would be willing to use in that way. They have to get a lot better first, and that shift from "fun" to "serious" makes the process very different. Better, in many ways, but way more intimidating.

Thing is, I've done it before: a series of shots down at Robinson Creek came out wonderfully, and I'd be happy to use them in marketing. Pity that's not our guesthouse! Some days, like on that morning, the light is good and I really get on a roll, but that hasn't quite happened here yet. I don't know exactly what it takes, but maybe it will happen again on its own.

Anyway... here's a few shots from the last few days.

Big pile o' construction stuff, most of which is happily gone now:

The arroyo near the east property line. The water is flowing so clear now that it's hard to see its boundaries, which makes for slightly surreal photos.

A faun lily. I'd only ever seen one of these before, but there's a whole patch of them, also near the east property line. I'm not sure whether they're "ours" or not but the neighbor really can't make any use of the small triangle of land between their driveway and our property anyway, so they're pretty safe from disruption. They seem to be at the tail end of their blooming, but others might crop up later.

One of the decorative tiles in the commercial kitchen, still crusted with grout. I sure wish they would wrap this up, since there's only a few more hours of work to do on the floor, and the equipment is due to be installed quite soon. Having it 99% done is driving me nuts.

I don't know exactly what it takes,

It takes time to settle in and get back yer perspective. You've just moved in - give it some time.
