If you sign up for "premium" membership with Recon, do the obnoxious ads go away?

They go on and on about all the "premium features", but don't mention the only thing I really care about.

NO. So that's a good reason not to. The main benefit of a membership is being able to see the "Private Galleries" of other members (AKA the naughty bits), looking at more than 35 or 40 profiles/messages a day, and I think saving more than 25 messages. Also making "Notes" on other members, if you're gonna be Connie Compulsive about your online cruising. And members get to engage in more than one direct chats at a time, but their interface is so wonky you'll find one taxing enough. And members get to participate in the "Top 100" popularity contest of "cruises," the most dubious membership benefit of all.

If you don't need or enjoy the voyeurism of looking at lots of "private," more graphic pics (or have other outlets for that), there's little benefit to a membership. If you want to use Recon just for its RL hookup potential, you're better off engaging those who interest you with messages, and ask then to send you some of their gallery pics -- the Recon message interface makes it very easy to attach photos to messages (one of the few things it does well) -- and you should upload some photos to do the same.

Just wondering... not that I'm STALKING anyone or anything like that. ;-)

It's kind of interesting but the constant twink-o-vision dancing baloney ads are so annoying I just can't do it. Silverdaddies is such a nice, calm site in comparison. It's like the difference between a discotheque and a meadow full of wildflowers.

I should check it out, especially given how silver I'm getting myself.

I'm pretty good at filtering out banners and ads from my focus, even animated ones. But I do appreciate a well-designed and serene site.

Check out Flashblock, a Firefox add on that stops Flash animations from loading (until you click on them). Highly recommended for your browsing tranquility.

It looks like installing Flashblock in Firefox solves the problem -- the ads never load. (This is only based on five minutes of experience with Recon, so no guarantees that something doesn't change down the line. But probably not.)

Actually, Flashblock is a very nice thing for most browsing.
