For thornyc, naylandblake, progbear and others - have you seen The Last Laugh (Der Letzte Mann)?

It's got cigars, pipes, big moustaches, and boot polishing, along with the most severe case of uniform fetish on the planet. And don't you wish they had such attentive washroom attendants nowadays? It's totally silent with no dialogue or captions, but the story explains itself quite well. Kind of a silly story, I won't give away the plot twist, but it's well worth the hour and a half.

It's also very well made. I'm impressed at how the art of film seemed to pop out of nowhere in the 20's fully mature, with hardly any significant development in the eighty years that followed. I guess it was so expensive, they had to really think about what they were doing.

I haven't seen that since college! I'm glad to see it's now available, and will try and watch it again soon. Nayland actually bought & converted a version so he can watch it on his iPod.

Now you should try Un Chant d'Amour, Jean Genet's homoerotic fetishization of prison life: guards, uniforms, prisoners... well, I don't want to spoil it with any more details.

Wow, that was great. John was especially thrilled, having not seen it since he was 25, when the Cleveland Art Museum screened it. He said that in the age before porn, it was really something!

Yes, it helps to view both films with some historical perspective. I should have noted that Chant was made in 1950.
