Cowboy's Handkerchief
Dec. 4th, 2009 09:36 amThere have been a lot of mushrooms coming up lately. John regularly brings back new species from his walks with Kitsune, and yesterday he found this: the "Cowboy's Handkerchief":

I had seen this in the book, but not read the entry, and had always assumed that it was so named because of the wavy shape of it's cap when mature - like a piece of discarded cloth. But no: it is so named because it is incredibly, disgustingly slimy.
On actually touching one, all I can say is, that cowboy sure didn't use it to blow his nose.

We actually have quite a bit of coccora on the property as well, or at least I'm 99.9% sure it's coccora, and Italians go nuts for them, but being an amanita I would want it examined by an expert first.
FWIW, over the years I have learned at the feet at some of the worlds foremost mycologists, and seen almost all of these "in the flesh" as they collected and identified them. So it's not like I'm flying blind on such things.
